Shopify Website Design and Store Support for Owners Who've Hit Shopify's Limits

Shopify sells itself as the easy option, and for the first few months it usually is. Then the theme fights you, an app breaks checkout, and you're scared to touch the page in case something else falls over. We design Shopify stores, fix the ones that have drifted, and hand them back in a state you can actually edit yourself.

Sound Familiar?

Common Shopify Problems and What's Actually Causing Them

Shopify is genuinely easy to start and quietly hard to run. Nothing collapses all at once — it drifts. Open whichever one sounds like your store.

01 Checkout is failing or behaving strangely

Checkout Errors and Failed Payments on Shopify

What's usually causing it

Almost always an app conflict, or a payment, shipping or tax setting that quietly changed. Shopify updates, apps update, and a rule that worked last month stops matching the orders coming in.

What we do about it

We duplicate your live theme and work on the copy, isolate which app is interfering, fix the setting or the code, then place test orders end to end before anything touches the live store.

02 The store has got slow

Slow Shopify Product and Collection Pages

What's usually causing it

Usually three things stacked: images uploaded at full camera size, a dozen apps each injecting their own scripts, and leftover code from apps uninstalled months ago but never cleaned out.

What we do about it

We measure what's actually costing you seconds rather than guessing, strip dead app code, resize and compress the image library, and defer the scripts that don't need to load first.

03 I'm scared to edit anything myself

A Shopify Store You Can Edit Without Breaking It

What's usually causing it

The most common one, and it's rarely your fault. Whoever built the store hard-coded sections into the theme instead of building them as editable blocks, so the customiser doesn't show you the thing you want to change.

What we do about it

We rebuild those sections as proper theme-editor blocks with names that make sense, then walk you through changing them on a call. The goal is that you stop needing us for the small stuff.

04 An app update broke my theme

Shopify App Conflicts and Theme Breakage

What's usually causing it

Apps inject code into your theme, and uninstalling an app usually doesn't remove it. Layer a few of those on top of each other and one update takes down a section that had nothing to do with it.

What we do about it

We roll back to a working theme copy first so you're trading again, then find the orphaned snippets and remove them properly rather than patching over the top.

05 Nobody can find my products

Shopify Collection Structure and Navigation

What's usually causing it

Collections that grew one product at a time, navigation that made sense at twelve items and doesn't at ninety, and filters that were never set up against the tags you actually use.

What we do about it

We restructure collections and tags around how people shop rather than how you stock, rebuild the navigation and filtering, and link related products so visitors land deeper than the homepage.

06 It looks fine and still doesn't sell

Shopify Conversion and UX Problems

What's usually causing it

Nothing is broken, which is what makes this one maddening. It's usually product page hierarchy, missing trust signals, or a mobile flow that adds a step at exactly the wrong moment.

What we do about it

This is what the Website Growth Diagnostic is for. We review UX, SEO and the conversion path, tell you which of the three is actually costing you money, and give you a prioritised list rather than a redesign quote.

What We Do

Shopify Website Design, Fixes, and Ongoing Store Support

Three ways we work with Shopify stores. Most owners start with one and add the others once they stop dreading their own admin.

Project

Shopify Store Design and Setup

A new store, or a rebuild of one that looks fine and converts badly. We design the layout, navigation, product structure and checkout flow around how people actually buy your kind of product — not around whatever the theme demo assumed.

A good fit when: you're launching properly for the first time, migrating from Wix, Squarespace or Etsy, or your catalogue has outgrown the structure you started with.

Ongoing

Shopify Troubleshooting and Technical Support

When an app stops talking to your theme, checkout starts failing, or a section disappears after an update — you message us and we fix it. No ticket queue, no offshore handoff, no four-day wait for a reply asking you to clear your cache.

Covers: app conflicts, checkout and payment errors, theme bugs, mobile display problems, slow product pages, 404s after a redesign, shipping and tax rules that stopped working.

Ongoing

Product and Collection Updates

New products, seasonal pricing, reorganised collections, swapped images, rewritten descriptions. The work that keeps a catalogue current and that nobody has time to do properly while running the rest of the business.

Done on a schedule, accurately, so your store doesn't quietly drift out of date between the busy months.

Handed Back So You Can Edit It Yourself

This is the part most Shopify work skips. If a developer hard-codes your homepage sections into the theme, you cannot change a headline without opening code — and that's how store owners end up paying for a five-minute edit six times a year.

We build sections as proper theme-editor blocks with names that mean something, keep customisations documented, and finish with a walkthrough of the things you'll want to change yourself. You should only be calling us for the work that genuinely needs a developer.

The Work

Two Shopify Stores, Two Very Different Answers

One store needed Shopify done properly. The other needed to be told, honestly, that Shopify was the wrong tool for what it sold. We'd rather be the agency that says which is which.

Shopify UX & SEO

Prizmatic: A Shopify Store Rebuilt Around How People Actually Shop It

Prizmatic had the products and the traffic. What they didn't have was a store anyone could navigate — collections that had grown item by item, a product structure that made sense internally and nowhere else, and a mobile layout that buried the thing a visitor came for.

We redesigned the UX around the buying decision: restructured collections, rebuilt navigation and filtering, tightened the product pages, and made the whole thing work properly on a phone. The SEO work went in alongside it, because collection structure and search visibility are the same problem viewed from two angles.

The point: when Shopify is the right platform, the fix isn't leaving it. It's building the store around your catalogue instead of the theme's assumptions.

Floral Keepsakes: When Shopify Was the Wrong Tool, and We Said So

Floral Keepsakes preserves flowers from weddings and funerals into custom pieces. Every order is configured — shape, size, colour, frame, mat, stand — and the studio takes walk-in drop-offs with deposits and balances due at pickup. Shopify could not do that without a stack of apps fighting each other, and no amount of theme work was going to change it.

So we said so, and rebuilt on WordPress and WooCommerce with a custom configurator: customers build their piece and see the price update as they go, and the studio runs everything from one order tracker with deposits, balances and per-order status built in.

The point: we build on both platforms, so the recommendation isn't shaped by what we happen to sell. Sometimes the honest answer is that your products don't fit a product-and-variant model.

Ongoing Support

Shopify Website Care Plans

Shopify handles the hosting and the security patches. What it doesn't handle is your store — the app conflicts, the theme edits, the product updates, and the thing that broke at nine on a Friday. That's what a care plan covers.

Shopify Support Plan

$499 every 3 months

15 hours per batch · 3-month minimum · 48-hour turnaround

Where We Work

A New Jersey Shopify Designer, Working With Stores Across the US and Abroad

We're based in New Jersey and a good share of our clients are here — Passaic, Bergen and Morris Counties and across Northern New Jersey. Local matters to some owners, and if that's you, you can meet us.

The rest of our work isn't local at all. Shopify stores are the same wherever they sit, and we run projects with owners across the US and overseas the way we always have: shared docs, recorded walkthroughs, and replies that arrive when we say they will.

One practical upside of the way we're set up: work often lands on your store overnight your time. You send it at the end of your day and it's frequently done before you open the laptop again.

  • Time zones aren't a problem. Requests get a reply within 48 hours regardless of where you are, and urgent breakage jumps the queue.
  • You get one person. The same one, who knows your store and doesn't need the brief re-explained each time.
  • No agency layers. You're not paying for an account manager to forward your message to someone else.
  • Everything documented. Customisations written down, so you're never held hostage by knowledge that lives only in our heads.

Common Questions

Shopify Questions We Get Asked

Including the ones where the honest answer is that we're not the right fit.

Can you work on a Shopify store someone else built?

Yes, and it's most of what we do. We inherit stores built by other developers, by agencies that have gone quiet, and by owners who followed a YouTube tutorial at midnight. The first thing we do is look at what's actually there — theme, apps, customisations, anything previously hard-coded — so we're not breaking something we didn't know existed.

Why does Shopify feel easy at first and hard later?

Because the easy part is real. Setting up a store and taking a first order genuinely is simple. The difficulty arrives with scale: more products than the original collection structure can carry, apps layered on to fill gaps, and theme edits made by different people over two years. None of that is a Shopify flaw exactly — it's what happens to any store nobody is maintaining deliberately.

Should I be on Shopify or WordPress?

Shopify if you sell products with straightforward variants and want the platform to handle payments, hosting and PCI compliance for you. WordPress and WooCommerce if your orders are configured rather than picked — custom sizing, per-order pricing, deposits, workflows that don't fit a product-and-variant model. We build both, which is the only reason we can answer this honestly.

Do you work with Shopify Plus?

We work with standard Shopify plans. Plus stores usually involve checkout scripts, multi-store setups and enterprise integrations that are better served by a dedicated Plus agency. If you're on Plus and not certain your needs actually require that, describe what you're dealing with and we'll point you somewhere useful either way.

How fast do you respond when something breaks?

Within 48 hours on every care plan request, usually sooner. If something is actively broken — checkout down, site not loading, payments failing — flag it as urgent and it goes to the front of the queue. A store that can't take money is a different category of problem to a product update.

Will I be able to update the store myself afterwards?

That's the intention, and it's why we build sections as theme-editor blocks rather than hard-coding them. You'll get a walkthrough of the things you'll want to change most often. Some work will always need a developer, but changing a headline, swapping a banner or adding a product shouldn't.

Do you build custom Shopify themes or customise existing ones?

Both, though we'll usually recommend customising a well-built existing theme. Custom themes cost more upfront and get harder to maintain every time Shopify updates the platform. We'll build one when there's a genuine reason — an unusual product structure, a specific buying flow — rather than by default.

Can you do SEO for my Shopify store?

Yes, though it's a separate service. Shopify's product and collection URLs have duplicate-content quirks that generic SEO advice misses entirely, and collection structure doubles as your site architecture. You can read about our SEO services, or mention it when you get in touch and we'll cover both together.
